LONG STORY SHORT
This aptly-named state park may be the best in the country.
Picture
Most of Southern Nevada is boring, monotonous desert. Anything of interest stands out with a bit more flair than you’d otherwise expect. Las Vegas certainly does, but Vegas has a less-famous neighbor to the northeast that stands out just as much: Valley of Fire State Park.

NATURE: INCROYABLE!
Red Rocks and a Unique Desert Landscape That’s Just Fun to Look At

Many “red” rocks are simply a shade of orange—still beautiful, but perhaps misnamed. The rocks in Valley of Fire are as red as it gets. But their color isn’t the only unique thing about them: They also contour the landscape in intricate formations that are as fun to scramble on as they are to look at.

EXPERIENCE: INCROYABLE!
A Short Drive or Hike is All You Need

When visiting an oven, it’s best not to stay too long. Fortunately, Valley of Fire State Park is a small package that’s quick to explore. The trails are short and memorable, and even though some trails close in summer due to the extreme heat, just driving through makes for a wondrous experience. We have driven all over the western U.S. and Canada, and the few miles in Valley of Fire are among our favorites anywhere.

VISITING: EASY
A Perfect Stop Between Las Vegas and Southern Utah

Those road-tripping from Southern California should become familiar with Valley of Fire, if they aren’t already. Situated just northeast of Las Vegas, it makes for a great stop on the way to Utah’s national parks. Take an hour or so to drive around, and maybe do a short hike in the most interesting landscape in Nevada.

STUPIDITY INDEX
The Stupid Are in Danger

Hiking here without water in the summer may not always be a death sentence, but heat stroke is certainly on the menu. The heat here is no joke, and even in winter it can feel unseasonably warm. The Stupid are notoriously unprepared, and Valley of Fire will punish those who are.

CATSBY’S TAKE
It Was Fine

I had enjoyed watching the dogs run around at home, but this was fine, I guess.
