LONG STORY SHORT By Kristine McGowan Holt was lookin' good over the holidays. Despite our lack of updates, we are not, in fact, still stuck in Idaho with frozen water gear. We've been with our families in Southern California for several weeks now. We came home in November to celebrate Jason's brother's graduation from paramedic school. Then we ate Thanksgiving dinner. Then we made our annual trip to Sequoia National Forest with siblings to chop down Christmas trees. And then we celebrated a quiet New Years together while recovering from a nasty bout of Covid.
This was always part of our plan (minus the Covid). When Jason started planning our route for the Big Trip, I gave him one requirement: I wanted to come home for the holidays. Now, I'm so glad we did. When in SoCal, we park our trailer in my parents' backyard. They live on a two-acre plot in the High Desert, which means their yard makes for a great parking spot. It also means that, for the first time in nearly a decade, I'm living with my parents again. And you know what? It's been pretty great. Sure, it's not as exciting as hiking in our country's most beautiful outdoor spaces. But for the first time in years, I don't have to drive nearly two hours to have dinner with my parents. I don't have to wait months to see my sister and her kids, who live less than an hour away. Best of all, I get plenty of opportunities to teach my two-year-old niece new things. (Not sure which is my proudest aunty lesson: how to say "ew," or how to lie still for a chalk body outline.) We could have packed more travel into the last couple months of 2023, but I'm glad we didn't. The time we've spent with family has been just as special as our time on the road. So, we're sorry about the lack of updates here—but we're also not. And we hope you got plenty of time with family and loved ones over the holidays, too.
