LONG STORY SHORT By Kristine McGowan If you've been following our blog here, first of all—thank you. Second of all, you've probably noticed that the longer we were on the road last year, the scanter our updates grew—until we finally stopped posting altogether in October. There are a few reasons for that. For one, we hit many national parks and did a lot of hiking in October and November. We visited Redwood, Lassen Volcanic, Yosemite, and Sequoia National Parks in California; Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada; and Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Bryce Canyon National Parks in Utah. And in those parks, we hiked a total of 113 miles.
To put it mildly, we were pooped. So we couldn't bring ourselves to overcome the two primary obstacles that barred us from updating our blog before we headed home for the holidays: our lack of signal and Weebly's clunky interface. We've been using Weebly to manage our website, and frankly, it takes a bit of wrestling to set up our blog posts. It takes even more wrestling to send out a newsletter, which we'd planned to do. Yet, after more than six months on the road, we've sent out a grand total of one—yes, one—newsletter. Weebly made it too much of a headache. That's why we're trying something new this year: We're starting a Substack. Substack isn't as versatile as Weebly, but it's much easier to use, especially when it comes to newsletter management. We'll continue to update our blog here, but we'll also post on Substack and manage our newsletter over there. Because we do plan to send out a newsletter this year. If you subscribed to our (nonexistent) newsletter at any point in the last year, then you likely received our first Substack newsletter earlier this week. If you didn't receive it and you'd like to subscribe, head on over to our Substack and enter your email. (You don't have to create your own Substack account. Just type in your email address and click Subscribe.) We promise we won’t spam you. After all, we don’t have the energy to spam anyone. Hiking’s pretty exhausting, you know? That said, even while exhausted, we should be able to share more stories from the road this year. We don't plan to do as much hiking—maybe—but more importantly, we expect to have more reliable signal, and we won't have to wrestle with Substack like we did with Weebly. Our newsletter will go out every other week, and in each issue, we’ll share where we’ve been recently and where we’re going next. We’ll also include links to stories we recently posted on either our Substack or our website, like these:
If none of this appeals to you and you don’t want to get our newsletter, that’s totally OK. No hard feelings. You can always check back here for updates whenever you feel like it. Otherwise, we'll see you on the road!
